With support from Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, the initiative under Nasha Mukti Abhiyan draws participation from locals, students, and civil society members
Bandipora : The GR Beigh Memorial Foundation, with the support of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Mr. Anshul Garg, on Sunday organised a barefoot awareness march under the banner of Nasha Mukti Abhiyan at Dak Bungalow, Dawar, in Gurez area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib, also joined the march, which witnessed active participation from locals, students, and members of civil society.
The march, led by Foundation Chairman Ishtiyaq Beigh, carried the slogan of building a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir and aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse.
Speaking to the media, DC Bandipora Indu Kanwal Chib said the rate of drug abuse in Gurez valley remains low, and efforts are being made to ensure it stays that way. “We are holding regular meetings to prevent drug addiction among our youth. Engaging them in sports and constructive activities through initiatives like Mission Yuva is proving very effective,” she said.
The DC also highlighted the broader social impact of drug abuse. “Addiction not only destroys individual lives but also weakens families and society as a whole. Awareness is the first step toward prevention. It is encouraging to see community-led organisations like the GR Beigh Memorial Foundation taking such initiatives in remote regions like Gurez. The administration will extend full support to such campaigns so that together we can protect our youth from this menace,” she added.
She further appealed to parents, teachers, and community elders to remain vigilant and guide young people toward positive and healthy activities.
Chairman Ishtiyaq Beigh expressed gratitude to the administration, especially DC Bandipora, and the people of Gurez for their support. He said the Foundation has been consistently working to promote education, social awareness, and youth empowerment in Bandipora and adjoining areas.
“Drug abuse is one of the most alarming threats facing our younger generation today. Unfortunately, even remote areas like Gurez are not untouched by this problem. Through this foot march, we want to send a strong message that society will not tolerate the spread of drugs in our villages and towns,” Beigh said.
He added that the Foundation is planning a series of awareness programs in schools, colleges, and community centers to educate young people about the harmful effects of drugs. “Our aim is not only to create awareness but also to build platforms where youth can engage in sports, culture, and skill development so that they remain away from destructive habits. We also want to work closely with rehabilitation centers to ensure that those who have fallen prey to addiction can return to normal life with dignity,” he noted.
Beigh further appealed to government departments, NGOs, and religious leaders to join hands in this campaign. “This is not just the responsibility of one institution. It is a collective responsibility, and only by working together can we ensure a drug-free future for Kashmir,” he said.
