Congress, National Conference, and the Politics of Opportunism The relationship between the Indian National Congress and the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) is a saga marked by uneasy alliances, mutual dependence, and recurring allegations of betrayal. From the days of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to the contemporary leadership of Rahul Gandhi, this partnership has been a rollercoaster of ideological convergence and political opportunism. While Congress has consistently extended its hand to bolster the National Conference, the latter’s actions have often been perceived as thankless, raising questions about loyalty and shared vision. The recent inclusion of JKNC in the INDIA alliance, spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and its wave of secularism, has reignited this debate, with critics labeling JKNC as an opportunistic force that capitalizes on Congress’s goodwill without reciprocating in kind.A Historical Alliance Marred by Distrust . The JKNC, under Farooq Abdullah, oscillated between cooperation with the central government and assertions of regional autonomy, often leaving Congress feeling shortchanged. This pattern of perceived betrayal has become a recurring theme, with critics arguing that JKNC’s loyalty lies more with political expediency than with ideological alignment.Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and the INDIA Alliance In recent years, Rahul Gandhi has sought to reinvigorate the Congress party and its alliances through initiatives like the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a nationwide campaign that emphasized unity, secularism, and inclusivity. This movement, which captured the imagination of many Indians, aimed to counter divisive politics and strengthen the opposition against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As part of this broader vision, Rahul Gandhi extended an olive branch to the JKNC, inviting it to join the INDIA alliance—a coalition of opposition parties aimed at challenging the BJP’s dominance in national politics. The inclusion of JKNC, led by Omar Abdullah, was seen as a strategic move to consolidate anti-BJP forces in Jammu and Kashmir, a region of immense political and symbolic significance. For Congress, *this was an act of magnanimity, effectively washing away the “sins” of Omar Abdullah*—whose leadership has faced criticism for its handling of governance and security issues during his tenure as Chief Minister. Rahul Gandhi’s outreach was rooted in the belief that a united opposition, grounded in secular values, could counter the BJP’s narrative in the region and beyond.JKNC’s Opportunistic Stance: A Cause for Concern?Despite Congress’s efforts to foster unity, the National Conference’s response has been viewed by many as opportunistic. The JKNC, critics argue, has a history of aligning with Congress when it suits its interests, only to distance itself when political winds shift. This perception was reinforced in recent times when JKNC leaders, including Omar Abdullah, made statements prioritizing regional autonomy and local concerns over the broader goals of the INDIA alliance. Such moves have fueled accusations that JKNC is more interested in securing power in Jammu and Kashmir than in contributing to a cohesive national opposition.

The JKNC’s decision to contest elections independently in certain constituencies, even while part of the INDIA alliance, has further strained relations. Congress leaders and supporters have expressed frustration, viewing these actions as a betrayal of the trust placed in JKNC. The Bharat Jodo Yatra’s message of unity seems to have been overshadowed by JKNC’s focus on its own political survival, raising questions about whether the party truly shares Congress’s vision of a secular, united India. The Road Ahead: Can Trust Be Rebuilt? The Congress-JKNC alliance is at a crossroads. On one hand, Rahul Gandhi’s leadership has breathed new life into Congress’s outreach efforts, creating opportunities for coalition-building in a fragmented political landscape.

On the other hand, JKNC’s history of prioritizing personal interests over collective goals threatens to undermine this partnership. For the INDIA alliance to succeed, mutual trust and a shared commitment to secularism and national unity are non-negotiable.The challenge for Congress lies in balancing its ideological commitment to inclusivity with the pragmatic need to hold allies accountable. For JKNC, the task is to demonstrate that it is more than an opportunistic partner—that it can rise above regional politics to contribute meaningfully to the national opposition. As India navigates a complex political landscape, the Congress-JKNC relationship will serve as a litmus test for the viability of coalition politics in the face of differing priorities and historical baggage.ConclusionThe story of Congress and the National Conference is one of ambition, compromise, and recurring disillusionment. From Nehru’s era to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress has consistently sought to align with JKNC in pursuit of a shared vision for India. Yet, JKNC’s perceived opportunism continues to cast a shadow over this alliance, leaving many to wonder whether true partnership is possible.
